6 posts · Joined 2021. #1 · Feb 16, 2021. My old JD 950 ran and worked great 4 days ago moving snow here in Montana. Parked it and lowered the bucket and 3-point scraper blade onto blocks as usual. Temps that day were single digit but had no problems. Today- Temps in the 20's. Engine fired up easy, but hydraulics won't work. Don't see any leaks.
Time to replace the hydraulic pump on my JD 1050. Hydraulics were a bit slow and weak so I bought a used pump and today is the day to swap it out. Like Roy said check the knob first, but by now the tractor should have atleast had a hydraulic filter change. If I remember right judging from the numbering system change, a 990 is at least a couple years old and probably should have had it changed regardless of the hours. Just my 2 cents. The hyd fluid that JD uses, Low Viscosity High Guard, is a modified AW-32 with some stuff added to lube the pump and seals. The old stuff JD used was JD 303. The 303 you can get at Walmart for under $50 per 5 gallons. The JD Low Viscosity High Guard from JD dealers is around $90 per five gallons.

950 slow-jerky hydraulic operation. I added JD field installed (kit) power steering to my 1989 950 4WD 5 years ago and since that install my frontend loader and 3 point hitch ran so slow they were almost unusable. I have question many people and my JD dealer without any solution.
